Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock nasceu em 1951,
na cidade alemã de Duisburg. Na década de sessenta, ele foi treinado como um
guitarrista e um baterista. Em 1969, fundou sua primeira banda, Archaeopteryx,
seguido em 1971 por Impuls. Impuls fez várias turnês, entre outros como o
suporte-act para Nektar, UFO e da banda progrock holandesa Earth & Fire, a última produção de
Mellotron e épicos à base de guitarra com encantadores vocais femininos. Não há
gravações oficiais de ambas as bandas,
embora um sobrevivente live-tape de 1971 de Impuls revela muito das idéias
musicais de Klaus que surgiriam nos anos 1980 e 1990. A fita apresenta um
instrumental longa chamado "Azrael", o que mostra claramente a
influência do início do Pink Floyd. Outras influências duradouras eram Nektar e
Hawkwind.
Em 1972, Klaus visitou um concerto
dos progrockers britânicos ,Genesis, que
então tocaram a magnífica faixa "Watcher of the Skies", que tem um
dos maiores Mellotron-Intros de todos os tempos. Este evento virou Klaus em um
verdadeiro Mellotron-aficionado. Em 1973, Klaus comprou um Mini-Moog, o instrumento que ficou famoso
por Keith Emerson. Ele iria adquirir uma grande coleção de (hoje) teclados e
sintetizadores antigos durante os próximos anos, incluindo até mesmo um
extremamente raro Mark V Mellotron, anteriormente propriedade de Klaus Schulze.
